Demand Response

Program Design and Implementation

Good Company has the experience to design demand response programs, or develop demand response services, to address specific needs of each market.  Every state is approaching this issue differently, and meter deployment plans vary widely.  Similarly, states vary on the role of the incumbent transmission and distribution utilities.  Some states offer (or their utilities offer) customer incentives to offset costs of demand response related hardware, and some incumbent utilities directly facilitate customer participation in the capacity or reliability demand response markets.  These may provide assistance, or create extra barriers to entry in each market.

Larger customers may install communications systems in many markets to participate in demand response programs today, in the absence of AMI systems. Advanced meter infrastructure deployments, and the communications systems that allow remote access of digital meters, will eventually facilitate smaller customer participation and reduce costs of demand response.

Good Company has demand response experience in numerous ISO markets.  The ISO-NE is transitioning to a Forward Capacity Market, which allows participation of permanent capacity reduction measures such as straight-up energy conservation, demand response and distributed generation, in four different categories.  PJM’s programs include the Real-time Pricing Model program, which is underway, and New York’s ISO has the Special Case Resources program.  Each of these programs operates in its own distinct way.

In addition to our ISO reports, we have developed State-by-State Reports on the status of competition, advanced metering infrastructure deployment, and utility programs and incentives, or subsidies that might contribute toward the development of demand response offerings in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

For our clients, we have also developed an Interactive Pricing Model, to calculate the value of an increment of demand response for any of the ISOs. It allows an end-use customer, an aggregator, a competitive retail electric provider, energy services or demand-response company to explore each market opportunity, and see the impact on the bottom line.
