Renewable Energy

Legislative and Regulatory Policy

As noted on the homepage, Good Company Associates has long been involved in Texas renewable energy policy. As recent as the 80th Session (2007), Good Company represented four renewable energy producers in the Legislature. Included in that portfolio were two biomass power companies, a geothermal power company and a hydrokinetic power developer.

During the 80th Session, Good Company was heavily involved in several significant pieces of legislation. All of the renewable energy bills in which Good Company was the primary lead, or heavily involved, saw significant legislative action. Three bills of major significance that were driven primarily by Good Company, or in which Good Company played a key role, were adopted into law. One major bill that was driven by Good Company was lost in the waning days of the Legislature, as was a bill that would have established a study on demand response.

The bills that were adopted by the Texas Legislature will increase the amount of renewable energy developed in Texas and also ensure a greater commitment to energy efficiency by the state. Good Company’s efforts will bring numerous environmental, energy and economic benefits to Texas and also result in new opportunities for its clients.

In addition to our legislative work, Good Company has also been involved in numerous renewable energy rulemakings and policy efforts at the Public Utility Commission of Texas. Good Company understands the need to stay active at the Commission, a regulatory body that often drives renewable energy policy once the Legislature acts.

Finally, the firm also maintains a presence in Washington, DC for two of its renewable energy producers, working to craft policy on Capitol Hill, at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), as well as other federal agencies that have varying degrees of regulatory oversight over renewable energy development.
